# China map sources

Built by `bun scripts/china/maps.ts` (mapshaper clip + simplification, TopoJSON object `units`,
feature id = ISO 3166-2:CN code).

| Units | Source | Licence |
|---|---|---|
| 31 mainland provincial-level units | [geoBoundaries](https://www.geoboundaries.org/api/current/gbOpen/CHN/ADM1/) gbOpen CHN ADM1 (2019, from Wikimedia Commons), clipped to Natural Earth's China outline | Public domain |
| Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan | [Natural Earth](https://www.naturalearthdata.com/) via `world-atlas` countries-10m | Public domain |

## Boundary choices

- **Lines of actual control.** geoBoundaries' ADM1 follows the PRC's claims (Arunachal Pradesh inside
Tibet). Clipping to Natural Earth's China outline puts the boundary on the lines of actual control
instead: Aksai Chin inside Xinjiang, Arunachal Pradesh outside. The India section draws India from
the Survey of India's depiction, so the two maps differ in Aksai Chin; both are labelled.
- **Taiwan** is listed by the PRC as a province but has been governed by the Republic of China since
1949. It is drawn from Natural Earth's own Taiwan feature, tagged `governed: "ROC"`, and always shown
  hatched.
- **South China Sea**: no maritime claim lines are drawn.
- geoBoundaries labels Guangdong "Guangzhou Province"; the build maps it to CN-GD.
