Counted
tonight.

Elections Canada publishes each riding's count as polling stations report, then has the returning officer validate it in the days that follow. Results may appear as soon as they are counted: the ban on broadcasting eastern results before western polls closed was repealed in 2014. What may not appear on polling day in a voting riding, until its polls close, is a new opinion poll.

Six ridings
close at 9:30 pm Eastern.

The ridings are in Eastern and Central time, so section 128 of the Canada Elections Act sets the hours: 9:30 am to 9:30 pm in Ontario and Quebec, 8:30 am to 8:30 pm in Saskatchewan, which keeps standard time all year. Every poll closes at the same instant, 9:30 pm ET (8:30 pm CT). The hours are computed from the Act; the returning officers' notices are authoritative.

Names as on the 2025 ballot; 18 ridings were renamed by Bill C-25 in 2026. Terrebonne's 2025 result (Liberal by one vote after a judicial recount) was later annulled.

How results are reported

From the poll
to the writ.

  1. Polling night Counted at each poll

When the polls close, election officers count the ballots at each polling station in front of candidates' representatives and report them to the returning officer. These preliminary results appear on Elections Canada's site as they arrive.

  2. Days after · s.293 Validated

The returning officer checks every statement of the vote and validates the results. Validated figures replace the preliminary ones; small changes are normal.

  3. Close results · s.300 Judicial recount

If the winner leads by less than one-thousandth of the votes cast, a judge recounts automatically. Any elector may also ask a judge for a recount within four days (s.301).

  4. Six days on · s.313 Declared elected

The returning officer declares the candidate with the most votes elected by completing the return of the writ. A tie is recorded on the writ.

  5. Contested · ss.524–532 In court

An elector or candidate can contest the result for irregularities, fraud or corrupt practices that affected it. The decision can be appealed straight to the Supreme Court of Canada.

The Terrebonne case, 2025–26

In Terrebonne, Quebec, the Liberal candidate led the Bloc by one vote after the judicial recount, 23,352 to 23,351. The Bloc contested the result: special ballots had been sent out with return envelopes printed with the wrong postal code, and at least one vote mailed back that way was not counted. On February 13, 2026 the Supreme Court of Canada annulled the election, and the seat fell vacant. Tatiana Auguste won the by-election of April 13, 2026 by 668 votes.

Elections Canada statement on the reasons ↗

What the law allows on polling day

  • Results: yes, as counted. Section 329, which barred transmitting results from one riding into another before its polls closed, was repealed in 2014 (S.C. 2014, c. 12, s. 73).
  • New polls: no, in a riding that is voting, until its polls close (s.328(2)). This site shows no new poll, average or market price from midnight on polling day in the voting ridings until the last poll closes.
  • Election advertising: no, in a voting riding until its polls close (s.323(1)). News and commentary are not advertising.
