Next Indonesia: national election expected Feb 2029 Preview →

✶ Calendar · jadwal pemilu · as of 5 November 2026

Five ballots,
then two dates.

Indonesia elected its president, both houses and every provincial and local assembly on 14 February 2024, and every governor, regent and mayor on 27 November 2024. From 2029 the Constitutional Court has split that rhythm in two: a national vote, then a local one about two years later. Neither date is set yet.

Pemilu serentak · how simultaneous elections work

Five papers,
one nail, one day.

Until 2014 Indonesia elected its legislatures in April and its president three months later. In 2014 the Constitutional Court ruled (14/PUU-XI/2013) that the Constitution's single "general election" covers both; from 2019 they have been held on one day.

Each voter gets up to five ballots of different colours, punches each with a nail in the booth and drops it into the box of the same colour. The polling-station committee then counts all five, in public, before the day is out. In 2019 the workload was blamed for the deaths of hundreds of station workers; for 2024 the KPU capped stations at 300 voters.

MK 135/PUU-XXII/2024 · 26 June 2025

From 2029,
two elections.

UU 7/2017 Arts. 167(3) and 347(1) and UU 8/2015 Art. 3(1) are conditionally unconstitutional. The President, DPR and DPD are elected together; provincial and regency/city assemblies and all regional heads are elected together at least 2 years and at most 2 years 6 months after the national officials are sworn in.

National · 2029, date not set

President and Vice-President, DPR, DPD

Three ballots on one day. No presidential nomination threshold any more: every participating party may put up a pair (MK 62/PUU-XXII/2024). The term of the current president ends on 20 October 2029.

Local · 20 October 2031 – 20 April 2032

DPRD, governors, regents, mayors

Provincial and regency/city assemblies and all regional heads together, between two years and two and a half years after the national officials are sworn in. The window here is computed from 20 October 2029.

Ends the five-ballot day after 2024. 2029 will elect only the President, DPR and DPD; local elections follow around late 2031 – early 2032, so sitting DPRD terms will need a transitional extension that lawmakers have not yet set (Nov 2026). Commission II's 23-member Panja RUU Pemilu met first on 5 Oct 2026; the draft is targeted for Dec 2026 – early 2027. Nothing passed yet.

Polls, quick counts and the quiet period

Three quiet days,
then 15.00 WIB.

No survey results may be announced in the three-day masa tenang before polling day, and no quick count until two hours after the last stations close in western Indonesia: 14 February 2024 at 15.00 WIB, 16.00 WITA, 17.00 WIT.

Polling stations open from 07.00 to 13.00 local time, so the east votes first: when Papua closes at 13.00 WIT it is 11.00 in Jakarta. The rule waits for the west. Regional elections follow the same pattern. This site applies these windows in code: polls and prediction-market prices are withheld from the first moment the masa tenang begins anywhere (00.00 WIT) until quick counts are allowed on polling day; quick counts and partial results wait for 15.00 WIB.

Pilkada Serentak · 27 November 2024

545 regions,
one day.

Nine months after the general election, every province except Yogyakarta (whose governor is the sultan) chose a governor, and 415 regencies and 93 cities their regents and mayors — 1.553 tickets in all. It was the first time all of them voted on one day; most of the winners were sworn in together at the palace on 20 February 2025.

MK 60/PUU-XXII/2024 · 20 August 2024

Lower bars to nominate

Replaced the rule that a party or coalition needs 20% of DPRD seats or 25% of votes to nominate a regional head with 6.5–10% of valid votes, tiered by the size of the voter roll; parties without DPRD seats may nominate. Provinces: 10,0% up to 2.000.000 voters, 8,5% up to 6.000.000 voters, 7,5% up to 12.000.000 voters, 6,5% above that.

MK 70/PUU-XXII/2024 · 20 August 2024

Age counts at nomination

The petition was formally rejected, but the court's reasoning held that every requirement, including the minimum age (30 for governor, 25 for regent/mayor), must be met when the KPU determines the candidates — not at inauguration, as a Supreme Court ruling (May 2024) had allowed.

When the empty box wins

In single-candidate regional elections, voters choose between the ticket and an empty box (kotak kosong). If the box wins, a new election must follow rather than waiting for the next cycle. In Bangka and Pangkalpinang the box won; both re-ran on 27 August 2025.

Disputes · 24 February 2025

Re-votes until August 2025

Of 40 regional result disputes heard on the merits, 26 were granted: re-votes (PSU) in 24 regions, one recount, one correction. Several candidates were disqualified. Re-votes ran from 22 Mar to 19 Apr 2025, with Papua's governor race and Boven Digoel on 6 Aug 2025 (and a second Barito Utara re-vote the same day after case 313/PHPU.BUP-XXIII/2025 disqualified both tickets for vote-buying).
